Building on the Center for Media Innovation

The Next Generation Newsroom builds on and incorporates the Center for Media Innovation’s successful ventures – such as the Pittsburgh Media Partnership – while complementing the other journalism taking place across southwestern Pennsylvania. It creates a teaching newsroom that brings together professional journalists, recent graduates, and students to fill gaps in local reporting while blazing and sustaining pathways to careers. It will also contribute to more diverse perspectives on local news by recruiting, training, and employing journalists with varied backgrounds and lived experiences.

Join us for this exciting journey as we work together to ensure that Pennsylvanians remain informed and empowered to shape the future of our communities. Together, we can uphold the essential role of local news in preserving the fabric of our society.

Don’t just take our word for it

Hear from some interns who participated in our summer program:

"This was my first time doing investigative work and it's amazing to come out of this opportunity with such a piece."

Maxine Van Nortwick

Summer '26 Intern, Technical.ly

"[This internship] was a huge doubt destroyer, as before the internship I was worried if I would be able to survive in a professional media newsroom [...] Now, I've learned that I can handle it and handle it well."

Cayden Hyde

Summer '26 Intern, Indiana Gazette

"The weekly workshops from editors gave me much more insight into journalism as a career and what I wouldn't have learned in any of my classes"

Riona Duncan

Summer '26 Intern, PMP Newsroom

"“This internship cemented my decision to pursue a career in journalism…, I realized how much I love working at local news outlets and helping the community through reporting and writing about things that are important to them."

Alexandra Keim

Summer '26 Intern, Latrobe Bulletin

The purpose of the Pittsburgh Media Partnership (PMP) is to support and promote local journalism across the region for the public’s benefit. The PMP — which comprises 29 media outlets in the Greater Pittsburgh area — accomplishes this by encouraging collaboration between and among partner outlets, developing and distributing resources, building capabilities and advocating for local journalism.

The Pittsburgh Downtown Media Hub serves as a shared newsroom for local journalism. Presented by Point Park University's Center for Media Innovation and located within walking distance to campus at 223 Fourth Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh, the Media Hub houses five news outlets: City Cast Pittsburgh, Next Pittsburgh, The Pittsburgh Independent, QBurgh, and Storyburgh. It also houses the Pittsburgh Women’s Press Club and the International Free Expression Project, and offers a daily drop-in space for others.

Abigail Hakas

Editor, Latrobe Bulletin

"I was offered a position as an editor at 22 solely because of the work I did for the [PMP] newsroom. Having the chance to take my time on stories, build a compelling narrative and push past surface-level coverage allowed me to rethink how I cover stories, and I'll carry that with me throughout my career."

Eliyahu Gasson

"Working with the PMP newsroom was a positive experience. I got to report on the stories I cared about, meet other journalists and get more comfortable with the reporting process."

Sarah Naccarato

"My internship allowed for me to realize what specifically I want in a journalism-based career and helped me remember what drew me to the field to begin with. Being able to work in the field gave me an opportunity to see exactly what it's like and learn my own preferences."
